History
The Katholische Spielgruppe Neugablonz was founded in March 1957 in the newly built settlement of Neugablonz, following a variety evening in the music room of the Adalbert-Stifter-Schule. Its founder had been a member of the Waldtheater am Proschwitzer Kamm near Gablonz since 1929. The parish priest of Herz-Jesu allowed the group to use the newly built parish hall, where its members built a stage themselves. The first performance, in October 1957, was a play about Saint Alexius.[2]
For its tenth anniversary in 1967 the group staged Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Jedermann. In August 1968 it set up the Studiogruppe Forum to perform plays by amateur authors. In 1976 the group renamed itself Theater im Turm. Its anniversaries were marked with productions of Goldoni's Der Diener zweier Herren (20 years, 1977), Nestroy's Der Talisman (25 years, 1982), Curt Goetz's Das Haus in Montevideo (40 years) and Ken Ludwig's Othello darf nicht platzen (50 years, 2007); for the 60th anniversary in 2017 it played Mord an Bord, a German stage version of Death on the Nile. An author who had written plays in the Gablonz dialect for the group gave the speech at the 25th-anniversary celebration.[2]
In 1986 the youth group Stromlos joined the association; its first joint production was Lysistrata in 1991. For the 50th anniversary of Neugablonz in 1996 the group staged the operetta Im weißen Rößl, recalling a post-war tour by actors of the Waldtheater who had played the piece in the expellee camp at Riederloh. Ray Cooney's Außer Kontrolle in 2002 was counted as the group's 100th production; by its 50th anniversary in 2007 it had staged 106 plays. In 2022 the association had nearly one hundred members.[2]
Repertoire
The group's programme combines plays in the Paurisch dialect with children's theatre and plays for adults.[1] It has staged Christmas and fairy-tale plays from its first years on, and several titles, such as Hockewanzl and Noppersleute, have been staged more than once.[3] At the 2019 Theater to go festival in Kaufbeuren's old town it performed a sketch in Paurisch in a discothèque.[4]
