The Aichacher Volkstheater e. V. (AVT) is an amateur theatre group based in Aichach in the district of Aichach-Friedberg, Bavarian Swabia, Germany; its registered seat is in neighbouring Kühbach.[1] Founded in 1984, it stages a large production each autumn, a youth programme and occasional open-air plays by Hans Sachs.[2][3]

History

The association's own history says it had its roots in rural comedy but soon turned to socially critical authors such as Ludwig Thoma, Heinrich von Kleist and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the latter two in Bavarian adaptations. Its early repertoire ranged from rural three-act plays to a first boulevard comedy and a Baroque mystery play. After the sudden death of its first director, Walter Gärtner, the productions were taken over by Ingrid Predasch and Claudia Flassig, and the group took part in training in acting, directing and experimental theatre. Working with the professional director Hans Kriss, it staged Friedrich Dürrenmatt's Der Besuch der alten Dame.[2] The group marked its 25th anniversary in 2009, and its 2024 production of Spamalot was described as its anniversary production.[4][5]

Repertoire

The main production each autumn ranges from classical comedy and verse drama to musical parody. Alongside it, the youth section Junges AVT has staged its own plays since 2015, a Mittelalter-AG performs at Aichach's historic market days, and smaller formats such as readings, a radio play and street performances are grouped on the website as Intermezzi.[6]

In 2005 the town of Aichach awarded the group its Kulturförderpreis (cultural promotion prize).[2] In 2025 it won second place in the boulevard theatre category of Larifari – Bayerischer Amateurtheaterpreis, awarded by the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V.; the group's website names its production of Spamalot as the basis for the prize.[7][5]
