Arzheimer Laienspieler (ALS) is an amateur theatre group based in Arzheim, a district of Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Founded in 1974, it began with sketches and one-act plays and now stages full-length comedies and crime comedies in the hall of the local primary school.[1][2]

History

The group was founded on 14 March 1974. It grew out of short performances at family evenings and carnival events of the parish church choir; its first appearance under the name Arzheimer Laienspieler took place on 16 November 1974 at a family evening of the Kirchenchor Cäcilia Arzheim. In its early years it also contributed short scenes to devotions in the parish church of St. Aldegundis. Five years after its founding the group had 18 members; its chronicle gives the current membership as 56.[3]

In 1979 the members built their own stage in the hall of the Grundschule Arzheim, which was inaugurated with a variety evening on the group's fifth anniversary.[3] After 1989 the stage had to be dismantled for about one and a half years because the school needed the space; a new stage was built by the members and opened in 1991. A youth group first appeared in 1996, and the group's 25th anniversary was marked in October 1999 with a reception at the school.[4]

In 2000 the group introduced an elected board for the first time. A fantasy comedy rehearsed in 2004, Der Butler und die Elfe, was abandoned during rehearsals after two players left. In 2009 Ein ungleiches Paar was performed by the youth members alone.[5] Rehearsals for Pension Schloss und Riegel were interrupted in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic; the play was performed in April 2024, almost three years later than planned.[6] The group celebrated its 50th anniversary in March 2024. Rehearsals for Ein besonders warmer Tag began in March 2026.[7]

Repertoire

In its first years the group performed sketches, one-act plays and short religious pieces at church and community events; from the 1980s it moved on to evening-length comedies, crime comedies and fairy-tale plays.[1][4] Herztropfen (2002) was performed partly in dialect.[5]
