Bartels Bühne Flammersfeld e. V. is an amateur theatre group based in Flammersfeld, Altenkirchen district, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Founded in 1989 as the Theaterspielgemeinschaft Flammersfeld, it plays children's and family plays on its open-air stage in Flammersfeld and tours comedies, crime plays and modern classics to venues in the Westerwald region.[1][2]
History
The group's theatre work began with a production of the historical local play Der Balzar von Flammersfeld in the Westerwald dialect (Wäller), staged on a self-built open-air stage between the church and the parish hall in Flammersfeld and rehearsed with a professional actor. For almost 17 years the group was known as the Theaterspielgemeinschaft Flammersfeld e. V.; at the end of 2006 the members voted unanimously to rename it Bartels Bühne, in honour of its founder and honorary chairman and his long-standing work for culture in Flammersfeld.[1]
In 2019 the group marked 30 years of theatre in Flammersfeld; in preparation, members renovated the open-air stage and held a theatre seminar.[2] During the COVID-19 pandemic the premiere of Ente, Tod und Tulpe, planned for November 2020, was stopped shortly beforehand by the lockdown; the production finally opened in June 2021 at the Rotes Haus in Seelbach.[3]
Repertoire
According to its own description, the group alternates between comic, serious, historical and topical plays, fairy tales, youth plays, comedy, sketches and improvisation; by about 2007 it had worked out 36 productions.[1] In recent years it has usually staged a children's or family play in summer on the open-air stage and one or two evening productions in autumn and winter, which tour to venues such as the Bürgerhaus in Flammersfeld, the Wied-Scala in Neitersen, the Rotes Haus in Seelbach, the KUJU in Oberhonnefeld-Gierend, the town hall in Altenkirchen and the Haus der offenen Tür in Koblenz-Metternich.[4][5] Successful productions are often given additional performances over several seasons; Ente, Tod und Tulpe was played from 2021 to January 2026.[4]
For the 200th birthday of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen in 2018, the group wrote its own children's play about his idea of self-help and performed it at local festivals.[6] In 2019 it also gave a reading for the bicentenary of Theodor Fontane.[7] The archived 2013 version of the website also lists a production of Nussknacker und Mausekönig, adapted by Marc Gruppe from E. T. A. Hoffmann's fairy tale.[8]

Venue
The group's home stage is the Freilichtbühne Flammersfeld, an open-air stage behind the Protestant parish hall at Raiffeisenstraße 48, which the Protestant parish has placed permanently at the group's disposal.[1][4] Open-air performances are cancelled if it rains an hour before the start.[11] Indoor productions are played at guest venues in the surrounding area.[1]
Organisation
The group's self-description gives 80 members of mixed ages and stresses theatre training, youth work and contacts with other groups.[1] In 2013 it set up a theatre working group for members and interested people, meeting fortnightly at the Rotes Haus in Seelbach, and it has held an improvised carnival session (Newer-der-Kappensitzung) there.[8][9] In 2016 directors from the group, together with the theatre group of the Westerwald-Gymnasium Altenkirchen, coached an intercultural theatre project of the Flüchtlingshilfe Flammersfeld; young actors from Afghanistan and Germany performed the resulting piece OMID in Horhausen in December 2016.[12]
