Brandenburger Kulturstadl is an amateur theatre ensemble in the St. Georgen district of Bayreuth, Bavaria, Germany. Its volunteer members stage four to five productions a year, including an annual comedy in the first months of the year and a Christmas fairy-tale play at the end of the year.[1][2]

History

The group goes back to a 1979 merger of two ensembles, the "Studiobühne Schützenhaus" and the "Theater für Kinder" of the adult education centre (Volkshochschule) in Weidenberg. After two seasons in the Schützenhaus in Bayreuth, the two groups separated. The children's theatre renovated a former dance hall ("Tanzstadl") on Brandenburger Straße in St. Georgen, reportedly with about 10,000 hours of volunteer labour, and named the building "Brandenburger Kulturstadl".[1]

Performances in the new house began on 6 November 1982 with Hänsel und Gretel. In the same year the group became independent of the Volkshochschule and was entered in the register of associations at the Bayreuth district court on 3 December 1982 as Brandenburger Kulturstadl e.V. In 2022 the association received the Heimatpreis Bayern, a regional award of the Bavarian state government.[1]

Repertoire

The programme combines a comedy run from January to March with a Christmas fairy tale, alongside crime plays, summer fairy tales and youth productions such as Emil and the Detectives.[1] The group's website reports around 100 performances a year.[2]

Youth group

A youth section has existed since the 1995 production of Emil and the Detectives. In 1996 it adopted its own statutes and board and joined the local youth council (Stadtjugendring); according to German Wikipedia it was the first Bavarian theatre group to do so. Young members play most of the roles in the annual Christmas production.[1]

Organisation

The Kulturstadl is a non-profit registered association run by a nine-member board. The chair of the youth group is automatically a full member of that board.[1]
