Dat Bremmer Knubbetheater e.V. is an amateur theatre group in Bremm, a wine-growing village on the Moselle in the Cochem-Zell district, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Founded in 1999, it has staged comedies in the local Bremm dialect since 2000.[1]
History
Theatre in Bremm goes back to the years before World War I, when the village's male voice choir (Männergesangverein) staged a play every Christmas in the hall of a local inn. Its activities, and with them the plays, stopped during both world wars; the choir resumed regular comedies and musical plays in 1947 and gave up theatre for good at the end of the 1950s.[1]
In early 1999 young people from Bremm founded a new theatre group as a section of the local gymnastics and sports club (Turn- und Spielverein), and from then on called it Dat Bremmer Knubbetheater. The group later became a registered association of its own.[1] The name refers to the Bremmer Knubbe, a local term for big, strong men with a good appetite for food and drink, as needed for the hard work in the vineyards and fields.[2]
The group's first production, Schwarzenbach im Umweltfieber, premiered on 8 April 2000 in the Bremm gymnasium, with advice from the befriended theatre club Moselblümchen from Reil.[1]
Repertoire
The group stages one comedy (Lustspiel) a year, performed in the Bremm dialect; since 2007 the titles of its productions have also been in dialect.[1][3] Several of the plays are set in Bremm itself or refer to local places such as the Calmont.[3]

Venue
The group's first production in 2000 was staged in the Bremm gymnasium (Turnhalle).[1] The productions of 2016 and 2017 were performed in the multi-purpose hall (Mehrzweckhalle) in Bremm.[5][8] In 2017 it rented the former flat above the Raiffeisenbank in the village centre as a rehearsal space, where props can be stored between rehearsals.[7]
Organisation
Besides its own productions, the association has hosted a guest cabaret evening at the Calmont-Forum in Bremm in July 2022.[9] It supports cultural and community projects in the village financially; in 2017 it donated 2,000 euros towards the upkeep of Bremm's forest playground.[10]
