Der Schauhaufen (registered as Der Schauhaufen e. V. Theatergruppe aus Kulmbach) is an amateur theatre group in Kulmbach, Upper Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. Formed in 2001, it performs comedies, revues, classics and its own pieces, often in Franconian dialect, mainly at the Theater Das Baumann in Kulmbach.[1][2]

History

According to its own account the group "was never founded, it just happened": in 2001 a group of friends, some with stage experience, began playing in a little-used photo studio in a former inn, with about 25 square metres for stage and auditorium. The first production was Johann Nestroy's Häuptling Abendwind, transferred into Franconian dialect, with new songs by the group's musician Thomas Schimmel replacing Jacques Offenbach's music.[1] The city of Kulmbach gives January 2002 as the start of regular performances.[2]

The breakthrough came in 2003 with the Franken-Revue, the first piece written for the group by its founder and house author Rüdiger Baumann. The group's website states that the seven planned performances grew to 25, all sold out;[1] Baumann later told inFranken.de that the revue was played 50 times, and that only then did the group adopt the name Schauhaufen. In the same report Baumann, who had turned the former inn hall in Ziegelhütten into his professional Theater Das Baumann, handed over the chairmanship of the club to Frank Schott, with Georg Mädl as deputy responsible for artistic matters; the Schauhaufen continued to perform at Das Baumann.[3]

Repertoire

The group deliberately avoids a single genre: besides comedies it has staged adaptations, classics and new pieces by Baumann, including a Franconian version of Chekhov's Der Heiratsantrag. It holds a monthly improvisational theatre evening, and a youth group works weekly on short plays under Baumann; with Aschenputtel-Story it took part in the all-Franconian children's and youth dialect theatre day in Rückersdorf in 2008. In 2009 it produced the Franken-Revue jointly with the Bletsch'n Bühna.[1] In autumn 2026 the group was performing J. B. Priestley's Ein Inspektor kommt (directed by Jakob Wenz), followed by Zweiter Weihnachtsfeiertag and, in January 2027, Sekretärinnen.[4][5]

Organisation

Members of Der Schauhaufen attend the meetings and training courses of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Mundarttheater Franken.[1][3]

Awards

  • 2006: Theaterpärla, the challenge trophy awarded every two years by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Mundarttheater Franken, for the Franconian version of Chekhov's Der Heiratsantrag.[1]
  • 2009: Kulturpreis of the Wählergemeinschaft Kulmbach (WGK), awarded in spring 2009.[1]
