Die Feudalen is an amateur street theatre group from the area of Nordholz near Cuxhaven, Lower Saxony, Germany. Its members appear as a troupe of eccentric cleaning ladies and perform short slapstick pieces and improvisations at markets, festivals and public squares.[1]
History
The characters were created in summer 2002, when the drama group of the Tanzboden Cuxhaven was performing in the streets of Rimini. At a market stall the actresses bought aprons as a souvenir, and from these grew the figures of Erna, Olga and Berta, three "cleaning specialists of a very special kind". The group has since been invited to many local festivities.[2] By 2023 it had grown to eight members.[3]
Performances
The group's main offer is a "feudal piece of theatre" of about 30 minutes for outdoor events; the name plays on Feudel, a northern German word for a floor cloth.[1] It has appeared, among other places, at the Lichterspektakel in Speckenbüttel Park in Bremerhaven in 2018 and at the KuBi cultural bistro.[3]
From 28 April to 1 May 2023 the group took part in the Lower Saxony amateur theatre days on the island of Baltrum, where it performed short improvisations in the island's squares, including folding instructions for hotel bed linen and tips on cleaning the tidemark and on climate protection. In May 2025 it premiered the piece Kumm in gang, appearing as "Wurster washerwomen", at the KulturLandKultur event in Bühlstedt, and it took part in the Fliegendes Kultursofa, a mobile stage format of the municipality of Wurster Nordseeküste.[3]
