Die Opernbühne e. V. Bad Aibling, which performs as the Opernbühne Maxlrain or Oper Schloss Maxlrain, is an opera association from the area of Bad Aibling in the district of Rosenheim, Upper Bavaria, Germany. Each summer it stages an opera in the riding hall of Maxlrain castle near Bruckmühl, combining young singers at the beginning of their careers, a choir of singers from the region and an orchestra, with professional conductors and directors.[1]
History
The company's history began in 1979 with a performance of Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne in a barn in Feldkirchen-Westerham, initiated by a circle of friends around the conductor Georg Hermansdorfer and the Walter couple. After productions at various venues it settled at Maxlrain in 1984, where Mozart's La finta semplice was the first opera performed in the riding hall. The registered association was founded at the turn of 1988/89; its first production was Donizetti's Il campanello in 1989. For many years Hermansdorfer researched forgotten operas in libraries, and staging rarely performed works became a focus of the repertoire. From 1994 James Barnes designed the sets; in 2007 he became chairman and artistic director, and Richard van Schoor was the company's conductor from 2007 to 2017. Chariklia Apostolu took over musical direction in 2018 and has chaired the association since 2020. The orchestra developed from an amateur ensemble into one of professional musicians and music students from the region between Salzburg and Munich. The association celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019.[2]
Repertoire
The association aims to perform music-theatre works that deliberately depart from the standard repertoire of state-subsidised houses, and in more recent years also well-known operas that let young singers make role debuts. According to the company, it has managed without state funding to engage a full opera orchestra each year, and keeps ticket prices low so that families can attend.[1] In July 2026 it performed Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro.[3][4]
