Theater Kunterbunt (also Figurentheater Kunterbunt) is an amateur puppet and storytelling theatre in Postbauer-Heng in the district of Neumarkt, Upper Palatinate, Germany. Formed in 1991, it performs puppet plays, paper theatre and storytelling with figures and music for children and adults.[1][2]
History
In 1991 a theatre group developed from a parent-and-child group of the Protestant church in Postbauer-Heng, whose young parents devised plays with figures for their children; regular small performances led to the founding of the Theater Kunterbunt. In August 1999 the group presented a short play, rehearsed with residents, in a service broadcast by ZDF from the Wurzhof, a Diakonie facility for people with disabilities. When the market town provided the Alte Henger Schule as a rehearsal space, the group also began organising guest performances by other puppet theatres; it lost these rooms in May 2008. In 2005 it was nominated for the Fritz Wortelmann Prize in Bochum, and in 2009 it was invited there with Albin und Lila.[1]
The theatre and others asked the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V. (VBAT) to admit puppet theatre, which led to the founding of a VBAT puppet-theatre district (Bezirk Figurentheater) in Ingolstadt in 2015. In November 2022 a room in the leader's house was converted into a small theatre with 17 seats.[1]
Repertoire
The repertoire includes the puppet play Der Wunschring, the paper-theatre piece Ich bin der Stärkste im ganzen Land, the Christmas story Am 4. Advent morgens um vier (premiered in 2022), storytelling programmes with music, Bible storytelling and workshops, for example on crankie (a moving panorama). In 2026 it presented storytelling evenings on Elisabeth of Thuringia, among others at the Night of Open Churches in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz.[2][1]
Awards
In 2018, when the VBAT honoured puppet theatre with its Larifari prize for the first time, Theater Kunterbunt received the second prize for Der Wunschring.[1]
