The Garchinger Bauernbühne e. V. is an amateur theatre club in Garching bei München in the district of Munich, Upper Bavaria, Germany. Founded as an independent association in 1977 out of a group active since 1973, it performs Bavarian folk farces in dialect.[1][2]
History
In 1973 Ludwig Fuß had the idea of founding a folk stage and gathered seven like-minded people; from the start the group devoted itself to Bavarian farces "so as not to let the Bavarian dialect decay". Rehearsing in the local youth centre (Freizeitheim), it made its debut in December 1973 with Ludwig Thoma's one-act play Die kleinen Verwandten at a Christmas party of the Technical University, with costumes borrowed from the Bavarian State Opera. For the town's Bürgerwoche in 1974 it staged its first three-act play, Gewitterwolken überm Bernleitnerhof, at the Gasthof Neuwirt, and thereafter performed regularly in summer and at Christmas.[2]
After 18 performances under the umbrella of the youth centre, members founded an independent association on 20 October 1977 at the Gaststätte Zur Post; the 23 founding members elected Adi Felsner as first chairman, and the club was entered in the register of associations. With Peter Jehl's three-act Heiter bis wolkig (1978), given six times, the group surpassed its earlier successes and received a full-page report in the Münchner Merkur. Directors over the years have included Adi Felsner, Günter Mayr, Wolfgang Ramadan, Manfred Eichleiter, Werner Högl and, since 2019, Christian Steinfelder, whose 15th production for the club was Ach du lieber Gott (2025). The club is preparing for its 50th anniversary in 2027.[2][1]
Repertoire
The repertoire consists mainly of Bavarian farces, interspersed with dialect adaptations of classics such as Der zerbrochene Krug and Der eingebildete Kranke; in the 2000s many productions were combined with a strong-beer festival.[3]
