The Harthauser Dorftheater e. V. is an amateur theatre association in Harthausen, part of the municipality of Grasbrunn in the district of Munich, Upper Bavaria, Germany. It emerged in 1981 from a local social club, began performing in 1982 and plays in the Bürgerhaus Harthausen, staging Bavarian comedies, farces and boulevard plays each spring.[1][2]

History

Theatre in Harthausen goes back to the years after the Second World War, when the rural youth association staged plays at the Gasthof "Alter Wirt". In 1971 young people from the village performed S'Herz in der Lederhos'n in the Catholic youth centre under Rudolf Friesinger, and from 1976 Schorsch Birmann directed full-length plays there. On the initiative of Birmann, Hans Leibig jun., Ewald Wagner and Willi Zirngibl, the Harthauser Dorftheater was formed in 1981 within the Stopselclub Harthausen, a social club founded in 1957. With financial support from the municipality, a movable stage was installed in the Bürgerhaus Harthausen (the converted youth centre), and on 25 April 1982 the group opened with Maximilian Vitus's Da ist der Wurm drin, initially with three performances. In 1985 the Bavarian Minister-President Franz Josef Strauß attended the premiere of a stage version of Ludwig Thoma's Lausbubengeschichten.[1]

In 1990 the theatre group separated from the Stopselclub and became an independent association, which joined the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V. in 1991; in 1999 it applied for entry in the register of associations as Harthauser Dorftheater e.V. The Bürgerhaus was renovated in 1998/99 and received a fixed stage. From 1994 the group also held autumn seasons with sketches and one-act plays, later combined with music. For the 1200th anniversary of Harthausen in 2014 it performed Der bayrische Jedermann with more than 40 actors in the pilgrimage church of St. Ottilie in Möschenfeld. The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted rehearsals in February 2020, and the 2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled. Hans Leibig, chairman from 1990 to 2015, ended his work as director in 2025 after 22 productions in 29 years.[1]

Repertoire

The association has staged at least one production almost every year since 1982, with no season in 1997 because of the planned renovation of the Bürgerhaus, and none in 2020 and 2021. Its repertoire has extended from Bavarian rural farces to comedies, boulevard plays, crime comedies and more demanding material. A children's and youth group has its own productions.[3][4]

Venue

The association plays in the Bürgerhaus Harthausen at Rosenstraße 7, which received a fixed stage on the north side of the hall, a dressing room and a small gallery during its renovation in 1998/99; in 2007 a glass-roofed terrace, largely financed by the theatre, was added.[1][4]

Organisation

For many years the Harthauser Dorftheater has donated the proceeds of each premiere to charitable causes, including local churches, care organisations and a village fountain inaugurated in 1999.[2] Since 2009 it has been one of eight members of the umbrella association Die Harthauser Ortsvereine e.V.[1]

Awards

On 15 September 2026 the district of Munich awarded the Harthauser Dorftheater the golden Ehrennadel des Landkreises München for special services in the social field; it was presented by the deputy district administrator Nicola Gerhardt in the Bürgersaal Ismaning.[4][5]
