Herxheimer Dorftheater e.V. is an amateur theatre association in Herxheim bei Landau/Pfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Its members have staged plays since 1987, at first as the Sisyphus theatre, and the association includes the women's theatre group WeibsBilder. It works with professional directors.[2]

History

Theatre work in the group began in 1987 with a production of Die Dreigroschenoper.[2] Until 2001 the plays were shown under the name Sisyphus (Sisyphustheater Herxheim); the women's group WeibsBilder followed in 1995.[3][4] Members also took part in two village theatre projects of the Herxheim-based professional Chawwerusch Theater, Starker Duwak (1991/92) and Nuff und Nunner (1998).[3]

The players were organised in the association Kulturzentrum Altes Kino e.V., founded in 1991. At its general meeting on 6 March 2002 the association changed its name to Dorftheater Herxheim e.V., so that the name would include the word theatre.[5] Its first production under the new name was the men's project Kohle in de Milchkann. Planning for it began in 2000; the piece was developed from improvisations by the players, written by a team of three authors and performed in October 2002 by sixteen men in Palatine German. The story was based on a group of young criminals in the Palatinate Forest around 1960.[5][6][7]

In 2020 the WeibsBilder production Rosa B. – beinah vergessen was nominated for the Deutscher Amateurtheaterpreis amarena in the category for productions in rural areas, according to the group's own website.[2][4] In 2021 the association staged N I C H T S at the Herxheim sand racetrack, with project funding from the programme Land in Sicht! of the Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater (BDAT). A video walk called Rennbahngeschichten accompanied it.[8][9] saal_46 – Maria Stuart im Bayrischen Hof premiered on 25 April 2026. It is about a staging of Schiller's Maria Stuart by young people in the dance hall of a Herxheim inn in 1946, and draws on memories of Herxheim residents. A revival is planned for spring 2027.[10][11]

Repertoire

The group has staged works by Bertolt Brecht, William Shakespeare and Ödön von Horváth, as well as new pieces and devised projects written for it, several of them in Palatine dialect. Since the 1990s the WeibsBilder have staged productions about women's lives in the region.[3][4][12]

Organisation

Under its statutes the association runs and supports projects that promote culture in Herxheim and the surrounding region, including rehearsal and performance opportunities for local groups. It also acts as organiser and sponsor of projects in the area.[20][2] The women's theatre group WeibsBilder is part of the association.[2]
