The Theater Landshut Berg, known until 2024 as the Hofberg Theater (Hofbergtheater Landshut), is an amateur theatre group in Landshut, Lower Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1950, it is one of the oldest amateur theatre groups in Lower Bavaria; it performs comedies and dramatic folk plays in dialect and is a section of the sports club SC Landshut Berg.[1][2]
History
The group was founded in 1950 as the Hofberg-Theater.[1] For many years it was not a registered association of its own but acted as a kind of section of the SC Landshut Berg. In 2024 it was officially integrated as an independent section of the sports club and renamed Theater Landshut Berg.[2] From 2006 it played in the Zeughaus of the association "Die Förderer"; during renovation work there it moved to the parish hall of Heilig Blut in 2024, and it returned to the Zeughaus in 2025.[2][3] Its autumn 2026 production is being rehearsed in the Salzstadel and is scheduled for 27 November to 3 December 2026.[2]
In the 1970s Kurt Ebert, then director of the Hofberg Theater, had the idea of bringing theatre onto the streets during the Landshut Wedding festival. Together with the festival's organising association Die Förderer, the Hofberg and Nikola theatre groups formed the Fahrende Komödianten der Landshuter Hochzeit (travelling comedians), who perform short plays, sketches and improvisation without elaborate sets at changing places during the festival; in 2026 the Theater Landshut Berg's troupe of comedians had 17 members.[3]
Repertoire
The group offers comic or dramatic folk theatre in dialect and shows long-forgotten customs.[1] Recent productions include the stage adaptation of Jörg Maurer's Alpine crime novel Im Schnee wird nur dem Tod nicht kalt, in a version by Thomas Ecker, in the Rudi-Wohlgemuth-Saal of the Zeughaus,[4] and Boandlkramerblues, for which the group engaged the Lower Bavarian playwright and director Katharina Daffner.[3][5] On the Saturdays in Advent 2023 and 2024 it performed the family Christmas play Ox und Esel in Landshut's old town and donated the collected 600 euros to a charity for homeless people.[6]
Venue
The group's main venue is the Zeughaus of the association Die Förderer in Landshut (2006–2023 and again from 2025).[2]
Organisation
The Theater Landshut Berg is a section of the SC Landshut Berg and has no legal form of its own.[2] It belongs to the local umbrella organisation Bühne Landshut, which holds an annual theatre day.[1][7]
