The Jugendtheater Martinszell is an amateur youth theatre association in Martinszell, part of the municipality of Waltenhofen in the Allgäu, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1981, it focuses on theatre work with children and young people and has more than 150 active members, half of them under 18.[1]
History
The group began in 1981 when Hermann Gabler, following an appeal by the parish council, invited young people to the parish hall in Martinszell to found a youth theatre group; 18 young people from Martinszell and Oberdorf came.[1] At the general meeting on 30 April 2025 a new constitution enlarged the board, and four members were awarded the silver badge of honour of the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V. for 25 years of active participation.[2]
Repertoire
The association has four children's and youth groups led by volunteer members; older members also stage plays on their own, such as Wer hat Angst vorm kleinen Mäx and Trip in die Freiheit. Larger joint productions of adults and children have included Der kleine Prinz, Das Dschungelbuch, Max Frisch's Andorra, Der Zauberer von Oz and two plays written by the group, Der purpurrote Mantel – Das Leben des Heiligen Martins and Die Schöne und das Biest. The association also has a juggling and street-performance group (Gauklerei) and a black theatre group.[1]
Recent projects include Piraten – Chaoten der Südsee, a Christmas gala revue in 2024, the Jahrmarkt der Träume (2022 and 2025) and the annual Theatrium live! (TH-Live) evenings, in which children's groups present their work before the summer break.[3] The play Alice wieder im Wunderland – Das Herz der Herzkönigin was performed ten times between mid-December 2025 and early January 2026 to more than 2,700 spectators.[2]
