Kleine Bühne Landau e.V. is an amateur theatre group in Landau in der Pfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, which performs in the town's Queichheim district.[1] Since 1980 it has staged one production each spring and donates the net proceeds of its performances to the charity Indienhilfe Franklin e.V. for projects in India.[1][2]

History

The group grew out of the Catholic youth community (Katholische Junge Gemeinde) of Queichheim, whose groups rehearsed sketches for parents' evenings in 1979. Three of its members took part in a theatre workshop in Bad Dürkheim and then played small roles with a theatre group in Ottersheim; they then decided to stage a full-length play in Queichheim themselves. The first production, Ingeborg by Curt Goetz, was performed in the Queichheim gymnasium in 1980. From the outset the proceeds were given to the aid projects of a priest working in India; the first year raised 545.81 DM.[3]

The group celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019 with Robin Hood – Die Legende von der Menschlichkeit, for which the number of performances was raised to eleven.[4] In the same year the city of Landau invited it to give the first theatre performance at the Goethepark-Plaudereien, a series of outdoor events in the town's Goethepark.[5] The 2020 production, Die zwölf Geschworenen, was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and cancelled in 2021; it was finally staged in 2024.[6][7] In 2025 the group performed its first original play, a crime comedy written and directed by one of its founding members.[8]

By 2024 the group stated that it had raised a total of about 210,000 euros for Indienhilfe Franklin; the regional press had given the total as about 170,000 euros in 2019.[9][4] According to the city of Landau, the performances draw up to 2,000 spectators a year.[2]

Repertoire

The group stages one evening-length play each year, ranging from classic comedies by Molière, August von Kotzebue and Curt Goetz to crime plays by Agatha Christie and modern farces.[3] Some productions have used live music and stage fights.[10][11]

Organisation

Since the early 2000s the group has had a regular exchange with the Théâtre Alsacien de Haguenau from Landau's twin town Haguenau: the Alsatian group attends its premieres and Landau members visit its productions in return.[55] For the city's New Year's reception in January 2024 the two groups performed a short play on German–French friendship written for the occasion.[56] According to its chairman, the group has also given guest performances in Landau's Altes Kaufhaus, took part in the 2015 Landesgartenschau and the first Landau Kulturnacht in 2023, and has awarded a prize to the best students in the school subject Darstellendes Spiel at several schools since 2019.[57]

Awards

In 2024 the group received the Ehrenamtspreis der Stadt Landau, the city's award for voluntary work, which that year was dedicated to arts and culture. It was presented on the International Volunteer Day, 5 December 2024.[2][57]
