History
The association was founded in 1995 by people who had worked together in various theatre projects in the Ruhr since 1977. When it opened its own theatre with 50 seats in November 1998, it saw itself as reviving Herne's tradition of small "room theatres" (Zimmertheater), the last of which had closed in the 1970s. The house has modern sound and lighting equipment and a bar.[1]
Repertoire
The theatre's own productions include serious drama, boulevard comedies and children's theatre.[1] Several comedies were written for the house by Jürgen Seifert, among them Rabatz im Altenheim, Die Hummels and Auguste stürmt das Altenheim; in a WAZ report, the association's chairman Andreas Zigann said these gags were "written for Herne". Other productions include Agatha Christie's Die Mausefalle (2008), Mörderkarussell, Camping Loch Ness, Zwei wie Bonnie und Clyde, Lügen, Sex und Sahnetörtchen and the horror comedy Graf Moorlochs Spiegel, premiered in 2016. According to the WAZ in 2008, each production usually runs for about a year.[3]
More recent productions include the farce Der letzte Tag des Ronald Crump, a satire on the presidency of Donald Trump, and the comedies Heldin des Tages and Die Königs im Glück.[4] The 2026 programme includes Robogirl – Eine für alles, the thriller comedy Die geheimnisvolle Emily Hart and the comedy Vorsicht, Patienten!.[2]
Guest performers have included the comedian Rick Kavanian and the magician Erasmus Stein, who set a record for fast joke-telling at the theatre.[3]
