The Kolpingbühne Günzburg is the amateur theatre group of the Kolping family in Günzburg, Swabia, Bavaria, Germany. Its tradition goes back to 1862, when members of the local Catholic journeymen's association first appeared on stage; it has borne its present name since 1966.[1]

History

According to the group, the Günzburg press reported on 4 June 1862 that members of "our journeymen's association" (Gesellenverein) had ventured onto the stage for the first time on Sunday, 1 June; from then on amateur drama was a fixed part of the association. After the war years the tradition was taken up again in 1951, and since 1966 the group has been called Kolpingbühne Günzburg. In 2003 it had more than 70 participants on and behind the stage, with many children and young people, and held monthly theatre meetings and further training through the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V. and the district of Swabia.[1]

Repertoire

The productions listed in 2003 range from religious plays (Dienst auf Golgotha, Das Magdalenenspiel, Pilatus, Franziskus, Jedermann) and classics such as Nestroy's Der Zerrissene and an adaptation of Stifter's Bergkristall to farces such as Außer Kontrolle, Lauf doch nicht immer weg and Ewig rauschen die Gelder, and children's plays such as Der Räuber Hotzenplotz, Pippi Langstrumpf, Peterchens Mondfahrt and Die kleine Hexe.[2] In the 2000s and 2010s the group concentrated on youth and family productions, among them Der kleine Prinz, Krabat, Die kleine Meerjungfrau, Kleiner König Kalle Wirsch, the musical Aida, Das Dschungelbuch, Pocahontas, Peter Pan, Der Prinz und der Bettelknabe, Das kleine Schlossgespenst and Aladin und die Wunderlampe.[3][4]
