The Kolpingsfamilie Dietmannsried is the local Kolping family in Dietmannsried, in the district of Oberallgäu, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1923 as a Catholic journeymen's association, it has had an amateur theatre group almost from the start, which stages a play roughly every one to two years, and a youth theatre group called "Pfiff".[1][2]
History
In autumn 1923 the parish priest Max Walser and Hans Rupp, already a member of the Kolping family in Kempten, won over ten more men to found a Catholic journeymen's association (Gesellenverein); the founding meeting took place at the Gasthof Bären. To become less dependent on donations from local craft businesses, the association founded a theatre group, whose early plays included s' Nullannerl, Der Freischütz, Jedermann, Ester und Mardochäus and Die Seemannsbraut, alternating religious and folk plays. The group soon became known beyond the area, and its income helped fund the association's first clubhouse in the parish barn in the early 1930s. Under the Nazi regime the association was increasingly suppressed and practically dissolved at the start of the war in 1939; it was revived at a meeting on 29 October 1951.[2]
Repertoire
Since the 1950s the group has mostly played Bavarian folk comedies and farces. In 2026 it staged Die Reise, a music theatre piece written by its director Stefan Köppler and set on a cruise ship; after seven performances the Kolping family donated 1,300 euros to a children's cancer research charity.[3]
