The Kolpingfamilie Eggenfelden (also Kolpingsfamilie Eggenfelden) is the local branch of the Kolping Society in Eggenfelden, Lower Bavaria, Germany, whose theatre group stages plays in Bavarian dialect. Theatre has been part of the association's life since it was founded in 1920; since 2005 the group has concentrated on open-air productions.[1]
History
According to the regional amateur theatre directory of Lower Bavaria, the Kolpingfamilie has cultivated theatre since its foundation in 1920. In its early decades it played classic three-act comedies.[1] The group's own chronicle lists productions from 1982 onwards, mostly one play a year or one per winter season. In 1999 it staged Pater Johannes Still – Der Retter von Eggenfelden, a play about a local historical figure, and revived it in 2002.[2]
With Der bayerische Jedermann in 2005 the group began performing open-air, and in the following years open-air productions such as Don Camillo und Peppone (2007) and Der Glöckner von Notre Dame (2010) alternated with indoor plays.[2] Since 2018 the open-air productions have taken place in the garden of the former Franciscan monastery in Eggenfelden.[1]
The production planned for June 2020, the year of the association's centenary, was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic; each performance was to have 160 numbered seats.[3] It was finally staged in June and July 2022.[4] For this production the group raised funds through a crowdfunding project supported by a regional bank, and the ticket revenue went to the A.S.A.M. Klosterverein, which supported refugees from Ukraine.[5]
In 2025 the group took part in the museum theatre in Massing with Der Pfarrgockel, an episode from the Königlich Bayerisches Amtsgericht, and staged a murder-mystery dinner at a local inn in October 2025.[6] Because of demand, the dinner was repeated in February 2026.[7]
Repertoire
The group plays Bavarian dialect theatre, folk plays, comedies, classics and open-air theatre.[1] In 2024 it performed its own Bavarian dialect adaptation of Ferdinand Raimund's Der Bauer als Millionär as Da Bauer ois Millionär.[8] The theatre group meets only to rehearse for productions.[9]
