kultBurG Alzenau e. V. is an amateur theatre association in Alzenau, Lower Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 2001 after a community production for the town's anniversary, it performs in the courtyards and knights' hall of Alzenau Castle, in particular as part of the town's castle festival (Burgfestspiele), and in a small studio theatre of its own.[1]
History
For Alzenau's town anniversary in 2001, the town administration suggested a community production of the local play Meister Lukas – Der Silberschmied von Alzenau, which Josef Pömmerl directed with local residents in the castle courtyard. After ten sold-out performances the cast wanted to continue, and on Pömmerl's initiative the theatre association kultBurG was founded on 24 October 2001.[1]
In summer 2002 the association and the town of Alzenau launched the Burgfestspiele, which kultBurG shaped significantly until 2011. In the large lower courtyard it staged Romeo und Julia, Die drei Musketiere and Kleist's Das Käthchen von Heilbronn; smaller productions in the upper courtyard and the knights' hall included Acht Frauen, Witwendramen, Volpone, Das Wirtshaus im Spessart and Amphitryon. From 2006 to 2011 children's theatre such as Die Biene Maja and Der Räuber Hotzenplotz was also part of the festival. For many years the association also offered historical castle tours with seven scenes at different places in the castle.[1]
The production Witwendramen received the Bavarian amateur theatre award Larifari in 2012.[1] After a pause of two and a half years caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the group returned in May 2022 with the farce Pension Schöller in the upper courtyard, a production postponed twice since 2020; the regional newspaper Main-Echo called the premiere a "comic highlight".[2]
Repertoire
By its own count the association has staged more than 70 productions. Besides the open-air performances it plays in its studio theatre (Zimmertheater) in the rehearsal rooms in the Altes Spital, with plays such as Frau Müller muss weg and Das Abschiedsdinner, and at other venues in and around Alzenau.[1] Its directors have repeatedly chosen plays by Fitzgerald Kusz, such as the political comedy Schlammschlacht (2017), whose open-air premiere had to move into the knights' hall because of rain.[2] In 2025 the group gave a staged reading on democracy as part of the local initiative Demokratie stärken. Vielfalt leben.[2]
For its 25th anniversary in 2026 kultBurG staged Volker Ludwig's musical revue Linie 1 in its original 1986 version at the Burgfestspiele, and revived its historical castle tours with eight scenes and about 40 actors.[3][4]
Young members
The children's group kultBurG-Kids has appeared since 2012 in the association's open-air series kultBurG-OPEN; its members have since grown up and now act alongside the adults.[1] A new children's and youth group, the kultBurG Teens, was founded in early 2023; in June 2026 it performed its self-developed play Notlandung in der Vergangenheit at the Burgfestspiele.[3]
Organisation
kultBurG has about 130 members. Since 2005 it has had its own rehearsal rooms with a store of costumes, props and technical equipment. Its members also organise readings and benefit concerts for social causes.[1]
