The Kultur- und Passionsspielverein Perlesreut e. V. is an amateur theatre association in Perlesreut, in the district of Freyung-Grafenau in the Bavarian Forest, Lower Bavaria, Germany. Since 2005 it has staged the Perlesreuter Passion, a musical-style open-air passion play with more than 250 amateur actors and volunteers, reviving a local tradition that ended in 1762.[1][2]

History

Passion plays were performed in Perlesreut from the 16th century, as a Comedi in the parish church and as a procession, until they were banned throughout Bavaria in 1762 during the Enlightenment. The 600th anniversary of the market town in August 2003 led the municipality to look for a lasting event presenting part of the local history. The author Michael Sellner from Freyung, commissioned to find a subject, came across records of the former passion play in the diocesan archive of Passau, and the idea arose to revive the play in a modern version, with music by the composer Martin Göth from Ortenburg. The new play premiered in August 2005.[2]

Repertoire

The Perlesreuter Passion – die letzten Stunden und die Auferstehung unseres Herrn Jesus Christus is performed in two acts lasting a little over two hours, with scenes, dialogue and music revised for each season; there is also a children's passion play. By 2026 there had been six seasons, seen by almost 30,000 spectators; the next season is planned for 6–8 and 12–15 August 2027. Script and lyrics are by Michael Sellner, who directs together with Markus Boxleitner.[2][1]

Venue

The play is staged on a large open-air stage in Perlesreut.[3]
