Kulturverein Freimersheim e.V. is a cultural association in Freimersheim, district of Südliche Weinstraße, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, whose theatre section, Theater Freimersheim, stages an annual comedy production.[1][2] The association goes back to a men's choral society founded in 1875; theatre has been played in the village since the 1920s, and the theatre group in its present form dates from the 1970s.[1][2]
History
The association was founded in 1875 as the Männergesangverein Freimersheim, a men's choir; women were admitted about a hundred years later and the choir became mixed. Theatre was already played within the society in the 1920s. Children's and youth choirs were attached to it at times, and a big band was later added. In 2017 the Männergesangverein 1875 Freimersheim gemischter Chor was renamed Kulturverein Freimersheim.[1] In 2018 the choir Four Connected joined the association as a further section alongside the mixed choir, the theatre and the big band;[3] a section for community activities, Kult-Futur, followed at the end of 2023.[1] The association celebrated its 150th anniversary on 22 November 2025.[4][5]
The group states that it has existed in its present form since 1976.[2] According to the regional press, a group of young theatre enthusiasts made its debut in 1977 with Ich kann die Verantwortung nicht übernehmen and the charade Ein aufregender Job. In 2016 the group, then part of the MGV Freimersheim, staged its 40th production; by then it had counted about 70,000 spectators since 1977, 40,000 of them in the preceding twenty years.[6] The 2017 production was its 41st.[7]
The 2020 production was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic and postponed to the following season.[8] According to the section's report at the association's 2025 general meeting, Der süßeste Wahnsinn (2024) was the group's greatest success so far: more than 60 percent of the tickets were sold in the first advance sale and all performances sold out. The theatre generated 81 percent of the association's income in 2024.[5] All ten performances of the 2026 production, a play the group had staged once before many years earlier, were sold out.[9]
Repertoire
The group concentrates on boulevard comedies and stages one production a year, usually with about ten performances between the end of March and the beginning of May. Work on a season begins in late autumn with the choice of play and casting.[2] The 2019 and 2022 productions are described by the group as German-language premieres.[10][11]
