The Laienbühne Icking e. V., known for its Zelttheater Icking (tent theatre), is an amateur theatre group in Icking in the Isar valley south of Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1993 by Stefan Mayer-Voigt, who has directed it since, it performs classic and modern drama each summer in its own theatre tent near Irschenhausen.[1][2]

History

According to the group, its members saw themselves at first as a kind of commedia dell'arte company, wanting to perform without great expense and to engage with the texts of Shakespeare and other playwrights. They first played in the large old barn of the Wach farm in Irschenhausen, building their own stage each time. Their first production was Shakespeare's Der Sturm, followed by Ein Sommernachtstraum, Was ihr wollt and Romeo und Julia. When the barn was no longer available, the group moved into a tent; in 2000 it staged Viel Lärm um nichts.[3]

Later productions included Friedrich Dürrenmatt's Romulus der Große, Shakespeare's Macbeth, for which a sword-fighting expert trained the actors, and Ödön von Horváth's Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald. Young players often joined from the drama groups of local grammar schools.[3] The group describes its 2008 production of Peter Shaffer's Equus as a landmark in its history. Several former members have gone on to drama schools.[1]

After a pause of seven years, caused first by the COVID-19 pandemic and then by the deaths of actors, the group returned in July 2025 with We Are Family by Tine Rahel Völcker, a reworking of the Atreid myth after Euripides, Aeschylus and Sophocles. The Münchner Merkur reported that the ensemble then had 20 members.[2][4]

Venue

The group owns a two-mast tent, 18 metres in diameter and 11 metres high, which seats about 300 spectators and was designed without additional supports so that almost every seat has an unobstructed view.[5] It stands by the Stockerweiher pond near Irschenhausen.[4] Besides its own productions, the association hosts events by other artists in the tent, such as the jazz musician Klaus Doldinger.[1]
