History

The idea for the ensemble arose in summer 2013 at a concert of a singing studio in which five students linked duets and solos on the theme Liebende Frauen – Leidende Männer with self-written scenes into a continuous story. Planning for a full musical began at the end of 2013, and with the youth choir choir's crossing of the music school of the Zweckverband Kommunale Bildung in Ebersberg, the group's first self-written musical premiered in February 2015 in the Alter Speicher in Ebersberg. The association was then founded to give the project team a formal structure.

Repertoire

The ensemble writes its own pieces. Its first production, Elfenpest – Das Mittelalter-Musical (2015), a story about a mysterious disease in a medieval town, grew from a planned children's musical into a production with almost 60 participants; the premiere in the Alter Speicher was sold out with about 450 spectators, but because of its size the piece was performed only once. The Süddeutsche Zeitung (Ebersberg edition) called it "an ambitious production" with good vocal and acting standards, and the Münchner Merkur reported minutes of applause.

The second musical, Norbert – Ein Nerd zwischen den Welten, about a young man who withdraws into an online role-playing game, was written by Simon Moll as a chamber piece with 18 songs for five actors and three musicians, so that it could be staged on small stages; it was the first MEMO production to be performed outside Bavaria, in cooperation with SOS-Kinderdorf. Later productions include the song evening Beziehungschaos, with songs from musicals such as Jekyll & Hyde, Tanz der Vampire and Sister Act, the crime musical Schauspielmord – Kommissarin Berger ermittelt, set in a small theatre on the edge of a city, and Zwischen Triumph und Zweifel, a song evening on heroines and heroes of the cinema and their film music.

Organisation

MEMO works on a project basis: new members can only join at the start of a new production, and the ensemble does not offer lessons itself but cooperates with a dance and musical school in Haar; professional musicians and coaches are engaged for individual projects.
