The Mittenwalder Bauerntheater e. V. is an amateur Bauerntheater (rural folk theatre) in Mittenwald in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Germany. It traces organised lay theatre in Mittenwald back to 1870 and performs mostly comic plays in the Bavarian dialect for locals and tourists on many evenings during the season.[1][2]

History

Organised lay acting has existed in Mittenwald since 1870. In its early years the group mainly played to raise money for local projects such as a village library or a gymnasium. Over more than 150 years its repertoire has ranged from dramas and operettas to large-cast folk plays and comedies. The group became a registered association in 1994; it has about 40 actors, who perform in changing casts.[1]

Repertoire

The theatre keeps several plays in its repertoire at the same time and plays each over several seasons; its programme ranges from farces to serious and dramatic pieces.[2] Local subjects include Der Geigenmacher von Mittenwald (1999–2001), Der Bubenrichter von Mittenwald – Im Banne der Schuld (1999) and Matthias Klotz (1983, 1993 and 2003), about the Mittenwald violin maker Matthias Klotz. The group has also performed one-act plays such as Die Preiskuah, Schneider Zwirns Geburtstag, Alles für die Katz, Das Wunderkind and Das falsche Mariandl.[1] In 2026 the repertoire comprised Im Pfarrhaus is da Deifi los, Verhexte Hex and Der Deifi und die Kramerin.[2]
