moa theater is an amateur theatre group in Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany. Each summer it stages one production as a series of open-air performances. The name comes from mobiles open-air-theater ("mobile open-air theatre").[1]

History

The association was founded on 7 February 2001, and its summer productions have been staged in Hanover every year since. In its early years the group performed only plays by William Shakespeare, starting with Much Ado About Nothing in 2001. It later moved on to twentieth-century and contemporary drama, including Bertolt Brecht's Baal (2006) and Friedrich Dürrenmatt's The Visit (2007). No productions were staged in 2016, or in 2020–2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic; in 2020 the group produced short audio plays instead.[1]

Venues

The group has no permanent indoor venue. From 2001 to 2007 it played in front of the Welfenschloss, and from 2008 to 2010 in the eastern courtyard of Hanover's New Town Hall. Later seasons used the Helmkehof cultural centre in Hainholz, the Platzprojekt in Linden and the terrace of the former Linden palace in the Von-Alten-Garten. Occasional indoor productions have included The Tempest (2006), staged after bad weather disrupted the previous summer's outdoor run.[1]

Repertoire

A production usually runs for about eight evenings within a period of up to ten days. One performance in each run is accessible and interpreted in sign language. Directors change almost every year. Some come from the group's own members; since 2010 the group has also worked with professional directors from outside. Since 2023 it has also staged murder-mystery dinners in local restaurants.[1]

Organisation

moa theater is a non-profit registered association with volunteer members, financed by ticket sales and local sponsors. Members build the sets, lighting, props and costumes largely themselves.[1] It is a member of the Amateurtheaterverband Niedersachsen e. V. and through it belongs to the Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater (BDAT).[2]
