Musical-Kids Idar-Oberstein (also Musical-Kids GS Auf der Bein & Co.) is an amateur musical theatre group for children and young people based in Idar-Oberstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Formed in 2002 around the primary school Auf der Bein, it writes and stages its own family musicals, most recently at the Stadttheater Idar-Oberstein.[2][3]
History
The group was formed in 2002 and staged its first musical, Im Elfenwald ist die Hexe los, the same year.[2][1] From then on it produced a new or revived musical almost every year; in 2012 it marked its tenth anniversary with a festival of highlights from its first ten years.[4]
Both a planned appearance at the children's choir concert 6K UNITED! and a new production planned for spring 2021 were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic; instead, together with the Stadtjugendamt (municipal youth welfare office) Idar-Oberstein, the group showed a film of its musical Burg Schlotterstein at a drive-in cinema in Idar-Oberstein in 2021.[5] After the pandemic break, the group celebrated its 20th anniversary on 26 and 27 November 2022 with a two-part jubilee show in the Stadttheater, with around 100 participants: former members presented a review of the 14 musicals staged up to then, followed by a short version of Chaos beim Weihnachtsmann.[6][2]
In March 2024 the group staged its third production of Rummel im Dschungel with more than 90 performers as part of the town's Kinder-Kultur-Tage; all four performances, two of them for Idar-Oberstein's primary schools, sold out, and around 600 people attended the premiere.[3] In September 2025 it presented a reworked version of SOS an Planet Pummerpuffer with about 50 performers.[7] In 2026 the group staged no musical of its own and instead took part in the 6K UNITED! concert with around 6,000 singers at the SAP Arena in Mannheim on 24 June 2026.[8]
Repertoire
The group stages its own musicals for family audiences, combining singing, dancing and acting; story, dialogue and songs are written within the group, and older members help develop the plots.[9][3] According to the group, eight of its nine different musicals are its own works.[2] The performers are children and young people aged 6 to 17 from all types of school, with an acting cast and a children's choir that also appears on stage.[9] Productions usually include family performances at the weekend and additional performances for schools.[10][7] Recordings of the musicals have been released on CD and DVD.[1]

Organisation
The group grew out of the primary school Auf der Bein in Idar-Oberstein and also includes pupils of other schools; it is supported by a friends' association.[9][12] Its productions are organised jointly with the Stadtjugendamt Idar-Oberstein.[6][10] Rehearsals include joint workshops, partly held at a youth hostel, and weekly choir rehearsals.[9] Besides its own productions, the group appears at local events, such as the 1050th anniversary celebration of Kirchenbollenbach in May 2026.[13]
