Musicalgroup e.V. Böhl-Iggelheim is an amateur musical theatre group based in Böhl-Iggelheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Its members, all amateur singers, actors and musicians, stage concerts and full musical productions with their own orchestra in the Rhine-Neckar region.[1][2]

History

The group grew out of an idea to re-enact musical numbers for a show and was at first a department of the sports club TSV Iggelheim, where it gave its first performance in December 2006.[3] In September 2007 it announced its registration as an association; its Musicalgala 2007 on 1 December 2007 in the Kultursaal in Limburgerhof was planned as its founding event.[4] The group itself gives July 2007 as its founding date, while an earlier version of its website dated the association to 2006.[1][3][5]

In the following years the group held at least one gala a year at changing venues and appeared in Limburgerhof, Lorsch, at street festivals, weddings and Halloween events, and at the 2011 Bundesgartenschau in Koblenz. After a gala in Speyer in September 2012 and the election of a new board in January 2013, it relaunched its website with a new concept.[3] With the self-written fairy-tale musical Es war einmal… it staged its first full-length piece of theatre.[1]

In 2016 the group began working with a newly formed orchestra of its own, which has since become a permanent part of the association.[1][5] For its first licensed production of a Broadway musical, Natürlich blond in 2019, it held an open casting in January 2019 that attracted applicants from beyond the region.[6] The group had secured the rights to its next musical, 9 to 5, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic; after two years of rehearsals, interrupted by lockdowns, and several postponements, it premiered on 2 April 2022 in Deidesheim.[2] In 2023 the group was one of five organisations, out of 24 applicants, supported by the MVV-Sponsoringfonds of the Mannheim energy company MVV, receiving 2,000 euros for its production of Sister Act.[7] Catch Me If You Can followed in May 2025 with six performances in Deidesheim.[8] Shrek – Das Musical is planned for January 2027.[9]

Repertoire

Until the mid-2010s the group performed galas and concerts of songs from musicals and film music. It added a self-written musical and, from 2016, concerts with its orchestra, and since 2019 it has staged German-language versions of Broadway musicals in licensed amateur productions, each involving around 50 performers and musicians.[1][7][10]
