The Naturbühne Trebgast is an open-air amateur theatre in Trebgast in the district of Kulmbach, Upper Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. Its stage lies in a former sandstone quarry on the Wehlitzer Berg, where an amateur ensemble from the region has played every summer since 1953.[1] Since autumn 2021 the artistic direction and day-to-day running of the theatre have been in the hands of a non-profit company, die naturbühne gGmbH, in which the association is a shareholder.[2][3]
History
The association Naturbühne Trebgast e. V. grew out of the Verkehrs- und Verschönerungsverein Trebgast, a local improvement society founded on 30 May 1892 by the Trebgast pastor Benker. In 1894 the society bought the Wehlitzer Leite, a disused sandstone quarry, for 250 marks, and the Wehlitzer Berg became the village's festival ground. The society's activities ceased during the Second World War; it was re-founded in 1948, when the site was revived and further land around the quarry was acquired.[1]
In 1953 the play Genoveva was performed on the floor of the quarry, where a small woodland pond had been the year before, and evening performances began. According to the society's minute book, the decision to form its own theatre group was taken on 21 September 1953. In 1955 the theatre became a legal body in its own right and the society was renamed Kultur- und Verschönerungsverein Trebgast; it took its present name, Naturbühne Trebgast e. V., in 1967.[1]
In 2018 the association had 283 members; the chairman reported that 90 actors, five directors and 49 helpers behind the scenes had worked on the 2017 season, which included the premiere of Luther – Rebell seiner Zeit.[4] No productions took place in 2020 and 2021.[5] Because no successor could be found for the long-standing chairman, Siegfried Küspert, the association's board and administrative council agreed on 18 October 2020 to a proposal by the theatre-makers Anja Dechant-Sundby and Sigurd Sundby to create a year-round theatre on the Wehlitzer Berg, with an indoor theatre for the winter planned next to the open-air stage.[3][5] The new non-profit company, die naturbühne gGmbH, leases the association's grounds and organises the artistic work, while the association continues as an independent non-profit society and co-shareholder.[3] Rehearsals for the first season under the new structure began in early 2022, with Anja Dechant-Sundby as artistic director.[6]
Repertoire
Each summer season comprises several productions of the amateur ensemble, usually a classic, one or two comedies or folk plays and a fairy-tale or family play for children, supplemented by guest performances of music, comedy and cabaret.[5][7] Since 2024 the company has also staged small-cast studio productions in winter.[8]

Venue
The stage occupies the floor of the former quarry on the Wehlitzer Berg, reached from the village by a footpath from the church that was lit in 1954; a road for cars followed only in 1966. The audience sat in the open until 1957. A first roof of timber and canvas was built in 1958 and replaced in 1965 by a steel construction with fixed seating; the present covered auditorium was opened in 1996. The site also includes a restaurant and other buildings that developed from a wooden hut and a rock cellar.[1][1]
Organisation
Since 2021 the productions have been run by die naturbühne gGmbH, a non-profit company, which also uses the Reichshof in Bayreuth as a venue.[2] The ensemble has given a regular guest performance at Blankenhain in Saxony as part of the partnership between the districts of Kulmbach and Zwickau.[4]
Awards
According to the association, the Naturbühne Trebgast has received the cultural prize of the district of Kulmbach, a prize of the Oberfrankenstiftung and the first Bavarian amateur theatre prize.[1]
