The Pellenz Musical School e.V. (also Pellenz-musical-school e.V., short PMS) is an amateur musical theatre association for children, young people and young adults in Nickenich in the Mayen-Koblenz district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Founded in 2001, it trains its members in acting, singing and dance and stages a musical about every two years, among them several musicals about the little dragon Laachi.[2]

History

The association grew out of the musical working group (Musical-AG) of the Nickenich primary school. After the success of the musical Laachi, written by a teacher at the school, he and a group of parents founded the Pellenz Musical School e.V. in 2001 to continue such projects.[1][2]

During the COVID-19 pandemic the group rehearsed online; the performances of Peter Pan, its tenth production, were postponed twice and finally took place in 2022.[3] Until 2022 the association had a single performing group. Because the age range had become too wide, the older performers then formed a group of their own, the Charakteure, which staged its first production, Der große Gatsby, in 2024. The two groups are meant to present their musicals in alternating years.[4][2]

In June 2026 the children's group staged Planet OZZ in Saffig, with all four performances sold out. For 2027 the Charakteure announced a production of Footloose in Nickenich.[5] In October 2026 the association marked its 25th anniversary with a show of excerpts from its earlier productions in the Pellenzhalle, with more than 60 performers.[6]

Repertoire

The repertoire consists of musicals, partly written for the group's young performers, such as the Laachi musicals (Laachi und Vulkanius is set at the Laacher See), and partly based on well-known stories such as The Jungle Book, Peter Pan and The Great Gatsby.[7][3] Productions were often also shown in other towns of the Pellenz and the surrounding region.[7]

The group's home stage is the Pellenzhalle in Nickenich.[3] Weekly training takes place on Fridays in the association's rooms in Nickenich.[2] While the Pellenzhalle was closed for renovation, the 2026 production was played in Saffig.[5]

Organisation

The association has two performing groups: the Laachis, its children's and youth group, and the Charakteure, made up of young adults.[1] In 2024 it had 60 active members, 34 children and young people in the Laachis and 26 in the Charakteure, trained by teachers of acting, singing and dance.[2] Members also appear at the Nickenich Christmas market to raise funds for productions.[3] The proceeds of the weekend performances of Peter Pan in Polch in July 2022 were donated to an outpatient children's and youth hospice in Koblenz.[7]
