Ruhrbühne Witten e.V. is a non-profit amateur theatre association with its own venue in Witten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, near the boundary with Bochum. Its repertoire includes comedies, crime plays, musical revues, readings and children's plays.[1]
History
The association was founded on 10 January 1926 as the theatre club "Waldesrose" by members of two earlier theatre clubs, meeting at an inn in Papenholz, Bochum. In 1935, under National Socialism, it had to stop performing. In 1948 Alfred Haselhorst, back from French captivity, brought former members together again, and performances resumed on 29 February 1948.[1]
The first post-war productions in public halls followed in March 1951. On 12 August 1967 the members voted to change the name to "Ruhrbühne Witten". After several moves, the group played from 1975 in the municipal Saalbau Witten. In December 1991 its Christmas production of Peterchens Mondfahrt drew 4,400 spectators over five days of performances.[1]
Venue
In 1999 the association rented part of a former Rudolf Steiner school building at Bochumer Straße 10a, together with a photography club, and converted it in volunteer work. The former gymnasium became a theatre hall with a proscenium stage and raked seating for 99 spectators. In 2010 the association bought the land and building from the city of Witten. In 2013 it added a studio stage for about 40 people and a covered outdoor stage.[1]
Organisation
In 2019 the association had 117 members aged between 3 and 97. Each year it stages two productions for adults and one Christmas fairy tale, with costumes, props and sets made by the members themselves. The Ruhrbühne is a member of the Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater (BDAT).[1]
