The Südtiroler Volksbühne München e. V. is an amateur theatre association in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, founded in 1976 by people from South Tyrol living in Munich. According to the association, it is the only South Tyrolean amateur stage outside South Tyrol; its actors each speak their own South Tyrolean dialect on stage.[1] Every November it stages a play in the parish hall of St. Wolfgang in the Haidhausen district.[2][1]

History

The association was founded in 1976, and some of its founding members are still active. From 1976 to 1995 it staged a play every year; theatre activity then paused from 1996 to 2001, until some driving forces succeeded in attracting young people and play resumed. Since then the group has performed every November in Haidhausen.[1] According to the group, its greatest successes came with socially critical plays and dramas set in rural life, such as Grummetzeit (1984), which was revived in 2004 because of its lasting popularity. In recent years its productions have each drawn more than 1,000 spectators over six evenings.[1] The association celebrated its 50th anniversary in summer 2026 with a festival, reported on by the South Tyrolean daily Dolomiten.[3]

Repertoire

Besides preserving South Tyrolean culture and its dialects – from the Puster Valley, Sarntal, Unterland, Burggrafenamt and Vinschgau – the group does not limit itself to any milieu or genre; recent authors have included Paulo Coelho, Ephraim Kishon, Peter Landstorfer and Karl Heinz Unger.[1]
