History
In 1991 a few families from Wachendorf visited the musical Starlight Express in Bochum; afterwards nine children swapped their football and ballet shoes for roller skates and rehearsed their own version, first shown to a small audience on 29 September 1991 in a garage yard. After three months the piece was ready for the stage and was performed at the carnival ball of the TSV Wachendorf in 1992 and attracted more children to the group. In autumn 1992 it received its official name, Sport Tanz Show Wachendorf, and became a section of the TSV Wachendorf. The idea came from its founder Gerhard, who led the group as initiator, trainer and organiser.[3][4]
On 23 March 1993 the group, by then 24 performers, gave its first full-length concert, Starlight Express, in the multi-purpose hall of Wachendorf, followed in autumn 1993 by Cats. Later projects adapted various musicals in the group's own style, for example Tabaluga on roller skates. As the number of performers grew, the roles were double-cast in two age groups; in 1998 the older members formed STS-Large with their own project, and the group later split into STS-Kids (about 5–14 years) and STS-Live for the older members. Since November 2008 STS has been a registered association, with the performers increasingly writing texts, editing music, choreographing and building sets themselves.[3]
Venue
In 2007 the group needed storage space for the props of the Cadolzburg musical Magdalena and took over the dilapidated former shop building at Bahnhofstraße 43 in Wachendorf, once the first self-service shop in the district and run by the founder's father. Members renovated it in voluntary work; STS e. V. became owner of the shop annex on 1 January 2013, and a training room of about 120 m² with a mirror wall opened in 2016, followed by further training and storage rooms by 2020.[5]
Organisation
Parents support the productions of STS-Wachendorf by making costumes and sets.[1]
