Die Schlampenlichter e. V. is an amateur theatre group in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, that describes itself as Nuremberg's gay theatre.[1] It grew out of plays staged since the mid-1980s at the annual Christmas-market meeting of the Nürnberger Lederclub, became a registered association in 2010 and stages one self-written comedy a year, traditionally in Franconian dialect and rhyme.[2]

History

The group's origins lie in the gay leather community. Every year, on the second weekend of Advent, the Nürnberger Lederclub (NLC) holds its Christkindlesmarkttreffen, whose highlight is the premiere of a new play on the Saturday evening. The idea came from NLC member Günter Hollweck in the 1980s. At first the plays were mostly based on classical operas; from the 2000s operettas, musicals, film classics and boulevard comedies were also adapted, leading to original pieces such as Die Ledermaus, Der Zauberer von QUOZ and Die Trepp’n und’s Biest, written in Franconian dialect and rhyme. After Hollweck's death, Reinhold Ehrlinger became a driving force of the group in 1997 and took over the writing.[2]

In January 2003, after the premiere of My Fair Leder, the members discussed the group's future, as the effort of each production had grown and there was a wish to play more than once or twice a year. In June 2005 the group performed outside Nuremberg for the first time, with Odysseus at the Oberangertheater in Munich; the Munich guest performances were dropped in 2009 for cost reasons and replaced by additional performances in Nuremberg. Since 2007 a single experienced actor has directed the productions; after the long-time director left in 2015, direction was taken over from within the group. In 2010 twelve founding members turned the group into a registered association.[2] Its audience, at first almost entirely visitors of the leather meeting, has become mixed.[2]

After Tod auf der Pegnitz (2019/20), the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the group's work; at Christmas 2020 it presented a 15-minute video Christmas story instead. It returned to the stage in December 2022 with Des Wahnsinns fette Beute, and in 2023 staged Irgendwas mit iX, the play originally planned for 2020.[2] With this production it won third place in the boulevard category of the Larifari Bavarian amateur theatre prize in 2025.[3] By September 2026 all performances of its 2026/27 production Abseits im Wunderland were sold out.[1]

Repertoire

The group writes its own plays: trashy, comic and often chaotic pieces that hold up a (distorting) mirror to the audience, many of them parodies of operas, musicals, fairy tales and films.[2]
