The Spessart-Bühne e. V. (also Spessartbühne Mespelbrunn) is an amateur theatre association in Mespelbrunn in the Spessart, district of Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, Germany. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025 and runs its own small theatre in the former dance hall of the Gasthaus Post in Mespelbrunn, with comedies and plays as well as children's theatre, cabaret and music.[1][2]
History
The Spessart-Bühne marked 50 years of existence in 2025 with an anniversary programme that included its own productions Chaos beim Bestatter and Love Letters, the children's play Super Mario rettet Frau Holle, guest performances by improv, comedy and music groups, a concert by an ensemble of the Jiangxi Song and Dance Theater from Nanchang, China, and the play Weiblich geboren staged with the equality offices of Aschaffenburg and the districts of Aschaffenburg and Miltenberg.[1] On 15 June 2002 the group officially opened its own theatre.[2] In 2022 it held a theatre workshop for young women on self-image and body image, ending with a performance of Bodybild by Julia Haenni.[3]
Repertoire
The group stages mainly comedies and boulevard plays, together with occasional serious pieces, a children's theatre production and guest performances.[1][2] Recent productions include Smombies, Die Niere, Chaos beim Bestatter, Nonnenpoker, Pony & Kleid, Das andalusische Mirakel, A. R. Gurney's Love Letters and Mark St. Germain's Die Tanzstunde.[4][5][6] The children's theatre group, directed by Lina Geis, performed Gerhard Schreiner's fairy-tale comedy Super Mario rettet Frau Holle with 19 children in spring 2025.[7]
Venue
The theatre is in the former dance hall of the Gasthaus Post at Würzburger Straße 9 in Mespelbrunn, the inn where, according to the group, Wilhelm Hauff stayed and heard the stories that inspired his Das Wirtshaus im Spessart. It was officially opened on 15 June 2002 and hosts theatre, cabaret and music.[2][3]
