History

The theatre was founded in 1973 by Leo Schmitt, a lecturer at the former teacher training college (Pädagogische Hochschule) in Augsburg, together with students and like-minded people, in the barn next to his house in Unterthürheim, part of Buttenwiesen – hence the name Stadeltheater. Schmitt designed and painted the sets and costumes himself. From the beginning the group staged demanding plays such as Die Bettleroper and Andreas Gryphius's Horribilicribrifax. In 1976 the local poet Alois Sailer wrote Der Bairische Hiasl for the group, and in 1984 it gave the German premiere of the original version of Fritz von Herzmanovsky-Orlando's Kaiser Joseph und die Bahnwärterstochter.[1]

In September 1985 the theatre barn burned to the ground an hour before a performance; no one was hurt and the costumes were saved. The group continued for two seasons at the Schwarzer Adler inn in Binswangen. After plans to rebuild in Unterthürheim failed for financial reasons, it moved in 1987 into the former gymnasium on the Wittelsbacherplatz in Lauingen, which was converted with support from the town and hundreds of hours of voluntary work; the first production there, Nestroy's Der böse Geist Lumpazivagabundus, premiered in June 1988.[1] Since 2002 the youth stage Junge Bühne has added its own productions, directed since 2014 by Marlene Götz. Leo Schmitt died in June 2005.[1][3] Performances had to be postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the association celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023.[1]

The theatre also hosts guest performances by regional and national musicians, cabaret artists and entertainers.[1]

Repertoire

The repertoire ranges from Baroque and Viennese popular comedies – Gryphius, Nestroy and Raimund – to classics by Molière, Goldoni and Shakespeare, modern comedies and crime plays, and children's plays of the Junge Bühne.[4]
