The Theaterabteilung des TSV Rückersdorf 1904 e. V. is the amateur theatre section of the sports club TSV Rückersdorf in Rückersdorf near Nuremberg, Middle Franconia, Germany. Founded as an independent section of the gymnastics club in 1908, it has performed comedies in the local Franconian dialect since the early 1980s and also has children's and youth groups.[1]

History

The sports club was founded in June 1904 as the Turnverein Rückersdorf.[2] Its theatre section grew out of the club's gymnastics movement and became an independent section in 1908. Performances were interrupted only during the war years. After play resumed in 1946, the section's successes included farces and folk plays such as Der Hunderter im Westentaschl, Die spanische Fliege, Die drei Eisbären, Der verkaufte Großvater and Die G'schicht vom Brandner Kaspar.[1]

According to the section, its breakthrough came in 1982 with Fitzgerald Kusz's three-act play Schweig, Bub!. Since then it has performed in the local dialect, and both the number of performances and audience figures rose considerably. Later successes included Die Ledigensteuer, Die pfiffige Urschl, Kurbetrieb beim Kräuter-Blasi, Bäckermeister Striezl, Die g'stohlne Kirchweih and Aktion Don Quixote. The section celebrated its 90th anniversary in 1998. In 2003 it staged its spring production for the first time as open-air theatre, in the garden of the Tucherschloss in Rückersdorf, with Löiber löing als flöing (Rather lie than fly), and planned to continue holding the spring production outdoors each June.[1]

Children's and youth groups

A children's group existed from 1922 and again from 1952 onwards; it performs mainly fairy-tale plays, exclusively in the weeks before Christmas. A youth group was founded in 1971 as a link between the children and the adult players. At first it staged its own full-length plays, up to Johann Nestroy's Lumpazivagabundus and George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion; as numbers fell, young members increasingly performed alongside the adults.[1]

Organisation

The theatre section is part of the TSV Rückersdorf 1904 e. V., a multi-sport club. It rehearses on Thursday evenings in the Bürgersaal in Rückersdorf. Its social life includes a traditional Whitsun excursion, which has taken place for more than 35 years.[1]
