Tellspiele Hägglingen
Tellspiele Hägglingen is an amateur theatre association („Verein Tellspiele Hägglingen“) in the municipality Hägglingen in the Canton of Aargau, Switzerland. They build upon a long tradition of amateur theatre in the village. Between 1950 and early 2000s, the association’s main aim was to stage Friedrich von Schiller’s play “Wilhelm Tell”, a play that tells a version of the key founding myth of Switzerland that has become very popular. Today, Tellspiele Hägglingen stage open-air productions of plays of different authors and in various genres.
History
In Hägglingen, there is evidence of amateur theatre already in the 19th century, see for example announcments of performances in the cantonal newspaper of 1873.[1][2]
According to the website of the association[3], early theatre amateurs in Hägglingen preferred to stage classical authors. During times of war and crisis, there was a taste for traditional folk drama. In 1951 there arose the idea of reviving the local theatre tradition by staging “Wilhelm Tell” by Friedrich von Schiller, leading to the establishment of the Tellspiele Hägglingen as an association.
Over the next decades, there were five productions of Schiller’s “Wilhelm Tell”. The 2001 production was the first to be staged open-air. In 2006 the Tellspiele decided to explore a different version of the Tell story and staged “Apollonia Tell” by Hans Glarner. Since then, they have turned to other subjects and plays, partly due to the wish to make the most of the opoortunities of their open-air stage.[3]
