Theater- und Carnevalverein Bechtolsheim e.V. (TCVB) is an amateur theatre and carnival society based in Bechtolsheim, Alzey-Worms district, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Founded in 1892 as Theaterverein Spätheim, it stages an open-air production every July and a comedy in the Advent season, alongside children's and youth productions and the village's carnival sessions.[2][3]

History

The society was founded in 1892 as Theaterverein Spätheim with the aim of enriching cultural life in Bechtolsheim through amateur theatre, folk music and singing. Its first productions were Der heimliche Sünder and Üb immer Treu und Redlichkeit, and in 1893 it gave its first performance outside the village, in Dolgesheim. Carnival processions and evening carnival events were added soon after.[4][2]

World War I brought activities to a halt in 1914. An attempt to revive the society in 1920 failed; in 1922 a new board was formed and Der Schmied von Ruhla was performed. The society's records end in 1932.[5]

The society was refounded as Theater- und Carnevalverein Bechtolsheim on 25 January 1953. Its first post-war production, Der Freischütz, followed on 10 January 1954, and plays such as Die Zigeunerin von Rocca Valla, Katharina Knie and Schinderhannes were staged in the following years, together with carnival sessions, masked balls and summer festivals.[4][5]

Fewer and fewer players were available in the 1960s. A younger board elected in 1974 revived the theatre work, and in 1975 the comedy Der Haftbefehl was staged; since then plays have been performed every year, initially in the pre-Christmas season.[4][5] In 1983 the society bought the former Spitzbriehaus and converted it into its clubhouse.[4]

The centenary was celebrated from 5 to 8 June 1992 with an academic ceremony, a variety evening, a Volkskunsttag, guest performances by other member groups of the association, a family day and a procession.[4] In 2001 the society moved from the Selzbachhalle to the Schützenhaus and started its open-air theatre.[4][6] The double anniversary of 111 years since the founding and 50 years since the refounding was marked in June 2003 with a theatre evening by groups of the association, an academic ceremony and a procession with more than 25 entries.[7] The 125th anniversary in 2017 included a murder-mystery dinner and an open-air event.[4]

A new youth theatre group was formed in autumn 2022 and a new children's group in spring 2024.[3] In 2026 the society marked 25 years of its open-air theatre.[6][8]

Repertoire

The society formerly staged mainly rural plays (Bauernstücke); today it performs mostly comedies and farces.[3] Each year the adult group gives two open-air performances on the first weekend of July and an Advent production with performances on the first and second Advent Saturdays and the second Advent Sunday.[3] The youth group has usually opened the Advent evenings with a one-act play.[9] Der verarmte Erbonkel (2018) was performed in the Rhenish Hessian dialect.[10] Undated productions mentioned on the society's website include the crime comedy Stress im Champus-Express, based on Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot.[3]

Venue

From the refounding in 1953 until 2001 the society performed in the Selzbachhalle, later the music hall of the volunteer fire brigade. Since 2001 its indoor productions have taken place in the Schützenhaus of the Schützenverein Petersberg, which was extended and converted for the purpose.[4] The open-air productions are staged on the Bogenplatz next to the Schützenhaus; in the early years a stage had to be erected for each performance.[6][8] In 2025 the hall was fitted with acoustic panels and headset microphones, funded in part by the LAG Rheinhessen.[22][25]

Organisation

Besides theatre, carnival is the society's second main activity. A council of eleven (Elferrat) organises the Beelsemer Fassenacht with a gala session, a senior citizens' session, a Blitzsitzung (a mix of carnival session and masked ball) and a children's masked ball.[4][26] During the COVID-19 pandemic it held its carnival session online as Fassenacht @ Home.[27] The society has been a member of the Deutscher Laienspielverband since 1957 and hosted its Volkskunsttage (folk art days) in 1965, 1992 and 2003.[5] In 2018 the adult group, which works without a director, rehearsed each play for three to four months.[14]
