The Theater Donauwörth e. V. is an amateur theatre association in Donauwörth, in the Donau-Ries district of Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1980 as the Bauernbühne Auchsesheim, it runs several companies: the folk-theatre stage Bauernbühne Auchsesheim, the open-air Freilichtbühne am Mangoldfelsen, and children's and youth groups. It has won the Bavarian amateur theatre prize Larifari twice.[1][2]
History
Theatre in Auchsesheim, a southern district of Donauwörth, was played by the drama group of the local Catholic rural youth (KLJB), under whose name it performed until 1979.[3] On 19 October 1980, 25 founding members established the association Bauernbühne Auchsesheim e. V., with Wolfgang Schiffelholz as chairman.[1] A children's group, Die Bühnenstrolche, followed in April 1985.[1][4]
In 1987 the association founded the Freilichtbühne am Mangoldfelsen and restructured itself as Theater Donauwörth e. V., with several companies. The youth group Locker vom Hocker was formed in spring 1995 and the puppet theatre Theater am Schnürchen in summer 1998. In 1996 the association moved into its clubhouse on the first floor of the fire station in Auchsesheim. It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2005 with 220 guests at the Tanzhaus in Donauwörth.[1]
In 2006–2007 the association built a new open-air stage together with the town of Donauwörth. A youth theatre with its own youth board was established within the association on 22 September 2007; it was dissolved by a change to the statutes in March 2025 for lack of interest. In October 2007 the Regierung von Schwaben recognised the association, for VAT purposes, as equivalent to a municipal or state theatre. On 3 October 2007 the Bühnenstrolche performed Der Stein der Phantasie in Schwerin at the federal German Unity Day celebrations, on the invitation of the federal government.[1][4][2]
The association has hosted workshops and meetings of the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V. and the Verband Deutscher Freilichtbühnen, whose southern region and national federation Wolfgang Schiffelholz chaired. The 2020 season was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. After 40 years as chairman, Wolfgang Schiffelholz stood down in October 2020 and was succeeded by Andreas Schiffelholz. In 2022 the association and the open-air stage Alte Bastei in Nördlingen hosted the Franco-German youth exchange Intercultour of the Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater (BDAT).[1]
Repertoire
The Bauernbühne Auchsesheim plays folk plays, farces, comedies and boulevard theatre. Its productions are staged on the weekends before Easter and end on Easter Monday.[3][5] Every summer the open-air stage presents one production for adults and one for children and young people. The youth play is chosen, cast and performed by the association's children and young people themselves.[6] The open-air productions include classics, operettas and musicals, comedies and adaptations of children's books. The Bühnenstrolche perform at Christmas parties, town festivals and in the open-air productions.[4]

Venues
The Bauernbühne plays in the hall of the Gasthaus Hoser in Auchsesheim, which has a small stage.[3] From 1987 to 2006 the open-air stage was in the courtyard of the Mangoldschule in Donauwörth. Members of the association built a steel grandstand with 380 seats there, which had to be put up and taken down every season. The new open-air stage on the Brabanter Weg, on the other side of the Mangoldfelsen rock in the old town, opened on 23 June 2007 with Die drei Musketiere. It has 450 numbered seats in a semicircle, and up to 13,000 spectators attend its productions each year.[6] The association reported more than 14,000 visitors in the 2026 season.[8]
Organisation
The companies of Theater Donauwörth are the Bauernbühne Auchsesheim (folk theatre), the Freilichtbühne am Mangoldfelsen (open-air theatre), Locker vom Hocker (youth theatre) and Die Bühnenstrolche (children's theatre).[2] A support association for the open-air stage, the Förderkreis Freilichtbühne am Mangoldfelsen, was founded on 4 September 2005.[1]
According to its chronicle, the association has 300 members, about 140 of whom are regularly active on, behind or in front of the stage; 75 members under the age of 27 belong to the children's and youth theatre.[1]
