Theater IrrReal is an experimental amateur theatre group in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany.[1] Founded in 1999, it develops its own pieces, combining spoken scenes with music, masks, black theatre and computer animation.[1][2]

History

The group was formed in 1999 around a core of former members of the VHS-Theater Augsburg, the theatre group of the city's adult education centre; its members are amateurs of different ages and professions. Its first production, Was ist wirklich?, a sequence of loosely connected scenes, was performed three times at the Bürgerhaus in Pfersee in October 1999. It was followed in November 2000 by Schatten-Los, which was given two additional performances in January 2001 and a guest performance at the prison in Aichach in May 2001.[2] Reviewing Schatten-Los, the Augsburger Allgemeine described the production as an "anregendes Experiment" (stimulating experiment), while noting that its central metaphor was not always carried through consistently.[3]

In the following years the group produced roughly one programme a year. Besides its own venues it appeared at the Kulturhaus Abraxas, in the Hoffmannkeller of the Stadttheater Augsburg (2004 and 2005), at the Augsburger Kulturpalette, at the exhibition PAX-ART 2005, at a celebration of the Lettl-Atrium at the Augsburg chamber of commerce (2004) and at the festival Grenzenlos in 2011.[2] In 2016 it staged All-Tags-Sorgen in cooperation with the group theater 8.[4] Its most recent documented production, Umwege zur Unendlichkeit, was rehearsed during 2022 and performed in April 2023.[1][5] The group's website was no longer reachable in October 2026.

Repertoire

All productions are devised by the group itself; texts and self-composed music are written by its leader.[6] Several pieces take literary or visual works as a starting point: Schatten-Los draws on Adelbert von Chamisso's Peter Schlemihl and Hans Christian Andersen's The Shadow, Sanfte Irre on poems by Peter Paul Althaus, Spiegel-Bilder on paintings by the Augsburg surrealist Wolfgang Lettl, and Lebens-Spiel on the imagery of the tarot.[6][2] The Augsburger Allgemeine reported strong applause for Sanfte Irre in 2001.[7]
