The Theater Kaufbeuren e. V., known locally as "TK", is an amateur theatre association in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria, Germany.[1] Founded in 1971, it stages mainly modern and classical drama and boulevard comedies, usually one production a year, and in recent years has played at the Stadttheater Kaufbeuren.[2][3]
History
The association was founded on 24 May 1971 by a group of theatre enthusiasts from Kaufbeuren.[1][3] Its first production that year was Hallo da draußen by William Saroyan, followed in 1972 by Jean-Paul Sartre's Geschlossene Gesellschaft.[2] According to the association, its 1977 production of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's Der Besuch der alten Dame drew more spectators than any before, and after its 1979 staging of George Bernard Shaw's Helden the ensemble was sent by the Volksspielkunst-Verband, as the best Bavarian amateur theatre, to give a guest performance in Switzerland.[1]
In 2014 the group staged Goethe's Faust, Part One in the original verse, its first classic performed in verse, and in the same year presented a companion piece, Faust reloaded, at the ALTBAU in Irsee. For the Shakespeare year 2016 it produced Der Kaufmann von Venedig.[1][2] The 2016 production Misstake by Monika Kugelmann was a world premiere.[3]
In May 2019 the TK took part in the festival "Theater to go", organised by the Kaufbeuren theatre groups under the city's cultural office, with a version of Dinner for One in the Alter Sitzungssaal of the town hall.[4] The 50th anniversary planned for 2021 was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic; after a two-year break the association marked it in October 2022 with Bertolt Brecht's Die Dreigroschenoper at the Stadttheater Kaufbeuren, directed by a professional director.[3]
Repertoire
The repertoire combines 20th-century drama, often by English-language and German-language authors, with classics and boulevard comedies; the association itself describes it as including socially critical and provocative plays and pieces considered difficult for amateurs.[1] Besides its own productions, it staged three co-productions with the Kulturwerkstatt Kaufbeuren: Der gelbe Vogel (1999), Misery (2000) and Frühlingserwachen (2003).[2]
