History

According to a regional tourism listing, theatre in Rosenheim can be traced back to the 16th century, when local players belonged to the tradition of the Passion play, and the present group was newly founded in 1963.[3] The association itself describes its beginnings as a handful of young players who continued the town's theatre tradition "since 1855" and staged the Italian comedy Don Camillo und Peppone in the then Kolpinghaus; productions ranging from Ludwig Thoma and Johann Nestroy to Molière and Stephen Sondheim followed. A children's theatre was added in 1968, and the association has given world premieres of several stage versions of works by Otfried Preußler, among them Die dumme Augustine, Das kleine Gespenst and Ich bin Pumphutt. In 2017 it welcomed its 500,000th visitor.[2]

In 2013 it staged Grenzland as a joint production with the Stadttheater Kufstein.[4] A youth group, revived in 2023, now forms the Junges Ensemble of members aged 12 to 27. In 2025 the association honoured long-standing members, appointing the founding member, long-time first chairman and author of the town plays, Horst Rankl, honorary chairman.[5][6]

Repertoire

The programme has three strands: spring and autumn productions of comedies and folk plays, a children's play or family musical staged each winter at the Kultur- und Kongresszentrum (KuKo), and the historical town plays, performed in the open air in the old town with 150 to 200 participants, horses and extensive technical equipment.[2][3] The children's productions include works by Preußler and Astrid Lindgren and musicals based on Peter Maffay's Tabaluga.[2][4]
