Theaterchen „O“ e. V., also called the "O", is an amateur theatre association in Traunreut, district of Traunstein, Upper Bavaria, Germany.[1] It grew out of a school theatre group formed in 1977, was founded as an association in 1983, and plays on the studio stage of the k1 cultural centre in Traunreut. It also organises the open-air Steiner Spiele at Stein an der Traun.[2]
History
In 1977 Gerhard Franz Xaver Unterforsthuber, known as G.F.X., began doing theatre with children and young people at the Traunreut secondary school; a few months later they performed their first play, Als die Zeit still stand…. From autumn 1979 the troupe appeared under the name ThiOst in the rooms of the adult education centre (Volkshochschule). In January 1983 it rented the hall of a music school on the upper floor of a building in Breslauer Straße, from which the "O" in its name derives, and on 23 February 1983 eight founding members established the association. Its first official season opened on 2 May 1983 with Fast wia im Kabarä.[3]
Under a 1984 agreement with the town, the group converted the former breakfast room of the youth hostel in Wichernstraße into a stage and workrooms, and opened there in January 1985; by then the non-profit association had 23 members. In 1987 it staged the first Steiner Spiele, an open-air play about the knight Hainz von Stein written by Unterforsthuber, followed by a small-arts revue (Brettl) and, from 1988, the annual Theaterweihnacht before Christmas. Unterforsthuber withdrew for health reasons in 1991; afterwards productions were directed by changing professional directors, with about three productions a year from 1995. In 1997 the group took over the organisation of cabaret guest performances from the Volkshochschule, started an improvisational theatre branch and acting courses, and founded the children's group O-Saft.[3]
The association celebrated its 20th anniversary in September 2003 and was entered in the register of associations at the Traunstein local court in May 2003. By its 25th anniversary in November 2008 it had given almost 1,000 performances of 69 productions. After the town decided to replace the building with a new civic centre, the group played its last production in Wichernstraße, Besuch bei Mr. Green, in spring 2009, and the old house was demolished in May 2009. Since the premiere of Das Haus in Montevideo on 5 March 2010 it has performed in the new k1 centre. High rents and falling audience numbers strained the association in 2011.[3] In 2012 it staged Calderón's Das große Welttheater in the courtyard of the Baumburg brewery estate for the brewery's 400th anniversary.[4]
Repertoire
The group's own productions range from boulevard comedies to classics and modern drama; up to the early 1990s most plays were written and directed by Unterforsthuber. Besides plays, the association has produced revues, the annual Theaterweihnacht (every December since 1988), children's theatre by its O-Saft group, improvisational theatre and the large open-air projects.[3][5] The table lists the theatre productions from the group's own production list; revues, the Theaterweihnacht and course presentations are left out.

Venue
From 1985 to 2009 the group had its own house in the former youth hostel in Wichernstraße, Traunreut, with a stage, workshop and costume room; it was demolished in 2009. Since 2010 the group has played on the studio stage of the k1 cultural and event centre in Traunreut.[3][2] The Theaterweihnacht of 2026 takes place in the Theaterfabrik Traunreut.[7]
Organisation
The Steiner Spiele, open-air plays at the castle of Stein an der Traun, were first organised in 1987 together with the town of Traunreut and have been held seven times up to 2009.[8][3] The association also runs the children's group O-Saft (since 1997), theatre workshops and, from 2012, a children's Theaterweihnacht.[3][9]
