theaterfreunde niedererbach 1976 e.V. is an amateur theatre group based in Niedererbach in the Westerwaldkreis, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Founded in 1976 by members of the local church choir, it stages one main production in most years, as well as youth productions and, every few years, open-air theatre.[1][2]
History
The group was founded in September 1976 out of the Chorgemeinschaft Cäcilia St. Katharina, a choir in Niedererbach.[1] According to the group's chronicle, its members first performed four one-act plays in 1977, and in the same year the theatre work was separated from the choir and a separate association was founded.[3] In April 1978 the group staged its first full-length comedy.[4] In the late 1970s the members also took part in the local carnival (Fastnacht) events and parades.[5]
The group began working with children and young people at the end of the 1970s, at first with Christmas and nativity plays, later with children's theatre workshops and longer productions.[6] The youth plays performed at Christmas in the parish church were given for charity, for several years in support of a children's cancer ward at the university hospital in Gießen.[7] The youth section performed as "U16 – das junge Team der tfn".[8] After a period without youth work, the U16 was re-founded in 2015.[2]
In 1991 the group performed in the open air for the first time, staging Ein Sommernachtstraum at the Neumühle in Elz.[9] In 1995 a dispute over whether the club should build its own theatre workshop or take part in building the new village community hall led to an extraordinary general meeting, at which the board resigned. Many members then left and founded a new theatre association in Elz, the "theater am bach".[10] In 1998 the group moved into its own rooms in the "Haus Erlenbach", the village community hall of Niedererbach.[11]
The group celebrated its 25th anniversary in October 2001 with a festival weekend.[12] No play was planned for the 40th anniversary year 2016; the anniversary was marked with a reception in the Haus Erlenbach, and a gala evening was planned for New Year's Eve.[2] After a break of four years, it returned to the stage in 2023 with Nächste Runde geht aufs Haus.[13] For the group's 50th anniversary it staged its first crime dinner show, Mord im Luftschiff oder Ein Schuss ins Blaue, in the Haus Erlenbach in October 2026; the performances had originally been planned for October 2025 and were postponed.[14][15]
Repertoire
The repertoire consists mainly of comedies and farces, alongside crime plays and thrillers, classics, fairy-tale plays and Christmas plays for and with children, and occasional pieces in local dialect.[16] In 1989 the group performed two plays by Willi Schoth in the dialect of Elz, and in 1993 Schweig, Bub! was played in Westerwald dialect.[17][18]

Venue
The group's indoor productions take place in the "Haus Erlenbach" in the centre of Niedererbach, where the club also has its own rooms.[20] For open-air productions it uses the natural stage on the "Alter Sportplatz", a former sports ground. For its first production there in 2001, the members dug a trench from the railway viaduct to the old barbecue hut themselves to lay water and power lines, and later built a raised stage area in front of a rubble-stone wall.[21][2] After a pause of six years, the open-air stage was used again in 2015.[2]
Organisation
Besides its own venue, the group has given guest performances in neighbouring towns, several of them at the invitation of the Kulturförderverein of the Verbandsgemeinde Wallmerod.[22][23] It traditionally holds a New Year reception.[16][23] In 2014 it entered its 2013 production Der Seelenbrecher for the Deutscher Amateurtheaterpreis amarena.[19] At the end of 2019 the group signed the Rhineland-Palatinate Erklärung der Vielen.[1][15]
