Theatergemeinschaft Amerang e. V. is an amateur theatre group in Amerang in the district of Rosenheim, Bavaria, Germany. It was formed in 1981 by members of the local rural youth movement and stages a production every year, mainly during Lent. Its repertoire ranges from Bavarian farces and boulevard comedies to open-air plays, fairy tales and youth theatre.[1][2]
History
According to the club's chronicle, theatre in Amerang goes back to a servants' association (Dienstbotenverein) founded in 1912 under the curate Jakob Reichl, which staged its first play, the four-act drama An Kindes statt, on Easter Monday 1917. Plays were also performed between the wars, by a group of young people in the 1960s, and by the Catholic rural youth. From the late 1970s young people again performed sketches and one-act plays at local events.[2]
The present group came together in 1981, when a handful of young people performed several plays, one of them self-written, at the opening of Amerang's new multi-purpose hall. Encouraged by the response, they founded the Theatergemeinschaft Amerang that year, built a stage and scenery, and in spring 1982 staged their first full production, S' dreifache Glück. The association was entered in the register of associations in 1983.[2]
Under the direction of Ingrid Kaindl the group soon moved beyond rural farce to boulevard comedies. Its open-air production Hottowa by Sepp Faltermeier drew almost 6,000 spectators in 1988, and the fairy-tale play Hänsel und Gretel (1996) more than 2,000. In 1998 the group toured Gerhard Loew's Bavarian comedy Da Hochstandsjosef to St. Wolfgang on the Wolfgangsee and to Wald near Garching an der Alz. The club states that it has grown from a handful of players to more than 200 members, about a quarter of them active. Its earlier youth group, Die Theatersocken, eventually disbanded as its members moved away.[2] On 10 March 2003 the group welcomed its 50,000th visitor. For its 25th anniversary in 2007 it hosted the 33rd district meeting of the Bavarian amateur theatre association at Amerang Castle, and in the same year staged Sepp Faltermaier's early comedy Der Weiberfeind; Hottowa, written for the group and set in 1706 on a farm near Amerang, was revived in 2002 at the Amerang farmhouse museum.[3]
Repertoire
Besides farces and comedies, the group has performed Ludwig Thoma's Der Wittiber and Die Witwen, the religious play Frau Pilatus, a crime comedy, evenings of Karl Valentin sketches, readings of Chekhov at Amerang Castle and Hofmarksgericht, a play by Krafft Freiherr von Crailsheim. Later productions include Die blaue Maus, Graf Schorschi and Pension Schöller (2001).[2] The group staged Der Meisterboxer in 2019 and returned to Pension Schöller in Lent 2026.[4][5]
Today's youth theatre works in age groups from 8 to 18.[6]
Organisation
It also organises the village's children's carnival every year and takes part in local and charitable activities.[1] In May 2026 Amerang hosted the district meeting of the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V., and in July 2026 the club ran a stage make-up course.[5]
