Theatergruppe „Vierthäler“ is an amateur theatre group based in Manubach in the Mainz-Bingen district, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Formed in 1997/98 for a play about a local 19th-century writer, it stages comedies in Manubach and performs short Hans Sachs plays in vineyards and at local festivals as Wingertstheater.[2]

History

At the end of 1997 a group of residents decided to mark the 200th birthday of the writer and former Manubach pastor W. O. von Horn (Wilhelm Oertel) with a play. A script was written for the occasion, and rehearsals began in March 1998. In the production, 17 performers played 47 roles on three stages at once, with scenes illustrated by projected pictures by Ludwig Richter from Horn's books. Besides Manubach, the play was performed in Horn's birthplace Horn and in Kirchberg.[2]

After this production the members decided to continue and joined the local cultural society Kulturverein „In R(h)einkultur“ e. V. In 1999 they set up the Wingertstheater (vineyard theatre), and in 2000 the group was admitted as the 100th member stage of the Landesverband Amateurtheater Rheinland-Pfalz. From 2001 it staged a full-length comedy roughly every one or two years. In 2007 the group had 19 members. By its own count it reached about 6,000 spectators at its various events in its first ten years, which it marked in 2008. A planned production for 2012 was cancelled after a copyright dispute involving the publisher.[2]

Repertoire

The main productions are comedies and farces by authors of German amateur-theatre plays, usually given three times in November. The Wingertstheater performs five rhymed short plays by Hans Sachs (Das Kälberbrüten, Der Krämerskorb, Das Narrenschneiden, Das Weib im Brunnen and Der Bauer in Kindsnöten) during guided walks through vineyards, with the actors playing among the audience, and at village, wine and castle festivals. These have included the 650th anniversary of the town charter of Bacharach and the Vierthäler (2006), the castle festival at Rheinstein Castle and the Landesgartenschau in Bingen (2008), an event in Budenheim (2009) and World Heritage Day at Rheinstein Castle (2011).[2]
