Theatergruppe „Vorhang auf“ e.V., also known as Büdesheimer Amateurtheater „Vorhang auf“, is an amateur theatre group based in the Büdesheim district of Bingen am Rhein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Founded in 1996, it stages two new productions each year during Advent in the Kulturzentrum Bingen, one by its adult group and one for children by its youth group.[2][3]

History

The group has its roots in self-devised puppet plays performed at festivities of the Protestant kindergarten in Büdesheim around 1994 and 1995. It was founded in 1996 by eight theatre enthusiasts from the Protestant Christuskirchengemeinde Büdesheim, and in Advent 1996 it performed its first play, Paul Maar's Eine Woche voller Samstage, in the parish hall in Büdesheim.[2] Because of the large audience, performances moved to the Kulturzentrum Bingen the following year, beginning with Die kleine Hexe for school classes.[2][4]

The association was entered in the register of associations in 1999. In the following years the city of Bingen commissioned the group each year to perform an Advent play for schools, complemented by public weekend performances.[2] Holiday theatre workshops for children led to the founding of a youth group in 2002; since then the youth group and an adult group have each staged one play per year.[2][4]

The group marked its 20th anniversary in 2016 with a Festschrift on its history, printed in 2,000 to 2,500 copies, and with productions of Die Feuerzangenbowle and Das Dschungelbuch.[5][6] The 2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[7] In 2023 the regional press reported about 30 active members;[3] for its 30th anniversary in 2026 the group gave its membership as 58.[4]

Repertoire

The adult group's repertoire ranges from comedies and crime plays to stage adaptations of well-known films, such as Arsen und Spitzenhäubchen, Die Feuerzangenbowle and Drei Männer im Schnee; the youth group performs adaptations of fairy tales and children's classics. Up to 15 performances are given each Advent season, including performances for kindergarten and school groups organised by the city's youth services.[5][4] By 2026 the group had realised 50 productions.[4]
