Theatergruppe -studio 61- is an amateur theatre group based in Rheinböllen in the Hunsrück, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] Founded on 13 July 1961, it describes itself as the first theatre group in the Hunsrück devoted solely to theatre, and plays comedies, dramas, crime plays, short plays and fairy-tale plays for children.[2]

History

The group grew out of a cast of amateur players who performed An den Wassern zu Babel, a play about Hunsrück emigrants written for the occasion by Karl Windhäuser, at a Heimatfest in Rheinböllen in early July 1961. At a celebration a few days later the cast decided to form a permanent theatre group, and on 13 July 1961 eight people signed a founding document; six more joined in the same week. From autumn 1961 the group was a section of the local gymnastics and sports club. It adopted the name "-studio 61-", written with two dashes and a lower-case "s", in 1963. Its stated aim was to make the best possible amateur theatre with regard to the local living environment, which it called "Gebrauchstheater" (utility theatre).[3]

From 1967 to 1980 the group organised seven international Hunsrück theatre days in Rheinböllen, in which, according to the group, 57 groups from 50 places in seven countries took part. In 1973 several members appeared in Edgar Reitz's feature film Die Reise nach Wien, and 17 members took part in the filming of Reitz's Heimat in 1981 and 1982.[3] The regional newspaper Rhein-Zeitung wrote in 2011 that members of studio 61 had played leading roles in both films.[4] Members also took part in the filming of Heimat 3 from 2002 and appeared in the television series Tatort.[3][2] In 1982 a youth group was formed, and in 1986 a children's group; neither still exists. For its 25th anniversary in 1986 the group gave its membership as about 30 active and 15 passive members plus 10 children.[3]

From 1987 the group staged hardly any full-length plays, and from 1992 to 1994 it was practically inactive. After the municipality built a new cultural centre, a cast of almost 40 performed the local history revue rheinböllener szenen for its opening in 1995; more than 30 of them stayed together, and the group was officially revived in June 1995. In March and April 1996 it toured Namibia, following contacts with a German-language theatre group in Otjiwarongo that had led to a friendship agreement in 1992.[3] The group celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2001 with Theater, nix als Theater, written for it by Horst Helfrich.[3] For its 50th anniversary in September 2011 it revived Hier sind Sie richtig!.[5][4]

Repertoire

The repertoire ranges from contemporary dramas and boulevard comedies to crime plays, evenings of short plays and Loriot sketches, and an annual fairy-tale play before Christmas, with daytime performances for kindergartens and schools.[2][3] Since 2004 the fairy-tale plays have been staged by a sub-group called the "Märchenstube".[3]
